What does it mean to validate a train pass or ticket in Italy?
This is also called "activating" a pass. The station official will put a stamp on the pass. Please note that the pass must be validated at the station before boarding your train, a conductor on a train cannot validate the pass.
How do I validate my train ticket?
Only regional train tickets have to be validated. For other trains, e-tickets can simply be shown to the conductor when asked on the train. Regional train tickets must be validated before departure.
Follow these steps to validate your regional train ticket:
• Use the check-in link provided in your order confirmation email. Your order confirmation email will have a subject line of “Your ItaliaRail order number is…”.
• Once the page loads and shows you your ticket, click on the “CHECK-IN” button.
• Once the page reloads with your passenger information, click on the “Next” button.
